Hello Carrie
NYLXS is a non-profit 503.c trust incorporating in 2001. We support the education, use and development of Free Software, as defined by the Free Software Foundation. Our activities have included demonstrations of products, programming education, adult education, publication of Journals, and textbooks, free Software Business Development.
Presently, we have opportunities to develop programs that are core to our mission, which is to address the deep digital divide that exists in the communities about New York City. Opportunities have involved Title 1 educational programs directly involved in public schools, and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development.
We have members who have worked through community and educational organizations to reach kids and adults and you break down the barriers of the digital divide. While it is true that today Free Software has spread far and wide from Google's Android to the highest levels of financing and banking, the empowerment the largest two components are now social/psychological and financial. We can address the financial, but to motivate children, and change a mind-set of from viewing electronic devices as more than consumer goods, to economic and educational opportunities, that takes a lot more work, and this is where NYLXS can service the community and provide the foundation for future entrepreneurship and economic development.
NYLXS's motto has been for nearly 15 years now, We are Do'ers. This is the attitude we try to instill with every contact. LIU can help us in these goals by providing space for meetings, helping to gain vital political and business contracts, allowing for space for educational services, and allowing for cross pollination of business and educational ideas. We would like to request a regular meeting time on a monthly bases for hackers development on user end products that involve Free Software, and for a biweekly meeting which for educational planning and development (A business meeting for the program).
Thank You for your attention to the matter
Ruben Safir President NYLXS
