SUBJECT | Subject: [NYLXS - HANGOUT] On the art of mailing lists
|
Ruben mentioned this mailing list by its LHS name only ('hangout' \n 'NYLXS') on Don Marti's linux-elitists mailing list. (Gosh, Ruben, a URL was too much trouble?)
I looked around. I found http://www.nylxs.com/mailing.html . It says:
> The Main NYLXS Mailing List is Hangout. [...]
1. Page doesn't say what the actual mailing list address is. This omission is a significant error, and should be fixed. There's a form to subscribe. Used that. No feedback whatsoever about what the mailing list address is.
2. Got a confirm mail from Majordomo-Owner-at-mrbrklyn.com. Oh, so maybe it's hangout-at-mrbrklyn.com or hangout-at-lists.rbrklyn.com. Can't tell yet. But we're already up to two Internet domains.
Oh, wait, the body of the confirmation message says:
Someone (possibly you) has requested that your email address be added to or deleted from the mailing list "hangout-at-www.mrbrklyn.com".
If you really want this action to be taken, please send the following commands (exactly as shown) back to "Majordomo-at-www.mrbrklyn.com":
Ah, now we're up to three hostnames, and it's increasingly unclear what the actual mailing list address is, as nothing clarifies that. This omission is a significant error, and should be fixed.
3. Sent confirmation. Got welcome message. Which doesn't state what the mailing list addresss is. This omission is a significant error, and should be fixed.
4. Not very coincidentally, Ruben posted just after I joined. Ah, the haplessly inept failure to state the mailing list address will be mitigated, right. Sort of.
Let's look at Ruben's headers. Those should clarify things:
To: hangout-at-nylxs.com Message-ID: <20150212071444.GC16612-at-www.mrbrklyn.com> Sender: owner-hangout-at-mrbrklyn.com Reply-To: hangout-at-mrbrklyn.com
Wow, that's just totally messed up -- not even counting the acute embarrassment of Reply-To munging in 2015.
Ruben, you should make up your mind what the mailing list's address is, and make your MLM and MTA use it.
I suspect you've never fixed this and never will, ultimately because you don't care. Which is sad.
