I use it, and like it. But I doubt it's better than the proprietary stuff in any way. If it is, I wouldn't mind hearing about that. I think though that's beside the point, because people running Macs and Windows either bought or pirated the proprietary stuff they use (at work) and aren't interested in something else (which if it's work related is understandable). It's mostly the shrinking number of us that use Linux desktops who need to know that it's usable now.
As far as advocacy goes, I agree that its main feature is that it's Free Software, and should be pitched as part of a Free Software desktop. Standalone though, nobody's going to switch desktops for it.
I am becoming worried that the day is coming when there won't be a Linux desktop anymore. Nearly all the people I know who used to run one uses a Mac now, and the people who are left are doing abominable things like Gnome3, which seems to be a plot to get people to stop using Linux desktops.
