The most likely scenario is Lighting. In the US and other first world nations, there are lightning arrestors along the network every couple thousand feet. This keeps the whole systems safe (In Theory) from lightning strikes and not take down the whole network. There are two issues here:
1) A low level lightning discharge can go through the system and create spikes and surges along the system without tripping an arrestor. 2) A high level super bolt have been known to take down local grids, including the North East Grid in 1976.
China's grid does not have such protection.
Since Lightning takes the path of least resistance, it will finger out to search it. It has been known to travel hundreds of miles to find it. The scenario I pose is the grid getting hit by lightning many, if not hundreds of miles away and finger out through the system until it found the path of least resistance - Through Her! This whole event would have only lasted a few seconds as the lighting gathers itself again and runs through her.
Thing is proving it. Depending how charred the charger and iPhone would prove it was lightning.
Fernando.
