This is not the war you think it is. If you read the article It explains what the new war is. Its the war for the Cloud which Microsoft started out at a big disadvantage compared to Linux and VMmare.
Truth be told Microsoft has been participating in open source cloud software development for a few years now as a member of the OpenStack steering comity, but this is the first time the open sourced a critical component of Windows itself.
also I don't know how many other people noticed this but Microsoft very quickly came out with a cloud platform very quickly after OpenStack with its shinny Apache 2 license began supporting Windows Hyper-V hypervisor nodes.
by the way in case any one doesn't know what a hypervisor is its an old mainframe term thats popped up again in PC equipment in the last decade and a half. essentially it is hardware and or software that allows you to divide a single physical computer into multiple logical (A.K.A. virtual ) computers. In mainframes and mini, and super computers this is done on the hardware level and could be controlled via software. modern PC equipment when para-virtualization is used the hypervisor is hardware/software hybrid in full virtualization the hypervisor is software.
