of inodes. The files can be anywehere but the inodes have to be in order.
Phsysical media database layered by a partition table layered by an inode database which describes to locates files giving them imaginary names that forms a hieratical filesystem database for the stupid human.
BTW - the stupid human gets pissed off when it is not being told where its files are in the imaginary hierartical filesystem described by the inode table!
Trying to find them by inode numbers and other inode attributes truly SUCKS.
