Debian also offers direct install cd' for xfce4, kde, and lxde, among others. In fact, at the moment gnome 3 (debian installer) is the only debian install "cd" that doesn't work, because it still doesn't fit on a single cd...
I came to like xfce, and cinnamon also looks promising, as it does salvage much from the wreckage of gnome 3. If one likes kde, wheezy froze with a particularly good version of kde4 for once...
I find neither gnome 3 nor canonical's unity at all usable for real work. I had not tried mate explicitly (as I moved to xcfe4), but since it is a true clone of gnome 2, and I did find gnome 2 already to be very usable, I assume it is as well.
