I started working in Manhattan in '87 when I was still a kid, but I grew
up in the burbs, and I only get to see the photos from the 70's.
My understanding has been that most of the crime is about stealing Apple
products and other gadgetry. It concerns me because one of the things I
liked about Brooklyn was wandering around on foot with my camera. But I
keep asking myself if this kind of crime isn't somehow just the
inevitable result of things of such large value (those iPhones and iPads
are really pricey) being displayed publicly in large numbers. In that
case the rise in the crime rate is due to the city's inhabitants
ignoring the truths already learned the hard way. Has there ever been a
time everyone could have walked around with $600 or more in their bare
hands and crime would not have risen?

My understanding about your wanting to matter more, is that you've got
the same problems everyone else has. Since I don't want to get into the
weeds right now, I'll just say that whether you stay or go, the past is
dead, and the future is "new". You have to re-invent yourself and start
from scratch and frame everything in 2013 terms for a society that's
fuzzy about 2010 and doesn't remember anything before 2008, and disdains
people who do.

I'm not sure if those are two unrelated thoughts, or do you feel that
you won't be getting remarried if you stay in Brooklyn? Certainly
there's got to be nice Jewish girls in Brooklyn.
