I hadn't been there in years, and not upstairs since NYFU. It would not have been a suitable venue for a tech talk anymore. (though you could probably arrange to use it as Paul suggested about Suspenders, which I didn't look into solely because one of the specifications of this experiment was to /not/ have secured space.) Nevertheless, the upstairs renovation provided a nice space for drinks and discussion. A bit quieter than downstairs, I could hear everyone who was talking.
As far as it goes, the Thursday event crossed all thresholds required for me to consider it a success. I've long wanted to try to do something with public space but it has always been the most difficult space of all to actually try and use, and both 9/11 and Occupy Wall Street have made it harder. There really seems to be very little useful and/or usable public space in Manhattan, at least when it comes to some kind of tech discussion.
