For ease of buying and looking over many kinds of laptops, I would recommend going to JR Music World to their Laptop section. They have many kinds by many makes including the ones you mentioned. They even have a discontinued section where you can get a good machine for under $300.
As for me, Its IBM/Leveno, Alienware, Toshiba, Compaq/HP, and MSi. I will only take a Dell if its given to me or under $50.
Staples is another good place but their selection is lacking (mostly Dells and HPs) and different store to store. Get a Staples store flyer and take it J&R and see who has the lower price and who will match it.
Data Vision (5th ave by 39th street, NYC) has many makes and models, bigger selection than J&R but you will be paying full price on them. They are negotiable though, and can go down on the price if you're good or you got a flyer for a lower price. Last time I was there they had the OQO - world's smallest laptop, but I doubt you would do GIMP on that. It sold for $799.

One kindly relation of mine thinks I need a laptop. I have been looking at various used ones. Dell Latitude, Samsung Sens 329, Gateway W340 ?A, some others really cheap.
I will be using GIMP sometimes, would like to learn Tex/Latex.
I know, I have 2 half days to get one before the Installfest. ---1312421089-1928666139-1345224386=:258 Content-Type: text/html; charset=us-ascii
