A couple of items we've contributed to the ISOC newsletter

*hackNY Fall 2011 Hackathon*
ISOC-NY was the fiscal sponsor of hackNY 's *Fall
Hackathon 2011* - held over the weekend of October 1st-2nd. This is a 24hr
event that begins with local startups demoing their latest applied
programming interfaces (APIs), after which student teams have 22hrs to
cobble together applications. All teams were required to use at least one
presenting company?s API in their hack to be eligible to win. Startups
selected to present were voted on by a student committee. The event
culminated with demos and judging - which, as the event overflowed its
space, were webcast live over the Internet Society Chapters Webcasting
Channel to back up
classrooms. The overall winner was
*MIDIphon* -
an app that enables a phone to become a midi controller. The Hackathon
- hackNY's fourth and largest ? attracted more than 300 registrants from
more than 40 schools in the U.S. and Canada. Some students flew in, and
sponsored buses ran from Brown University, Harvard University, MIT,
Northeastern University, Princeton University, Rhode Island Institute of
Design, Rutgers University, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University and
Carnegie Mellon University. The hackathon was run using a new
platform, *Hacker
League * , created by Rutgers students, including
hackNY alumni, in the days prior to the event.

*Creating Participatory Learning Through Performance*
ISOC-NY President David Solomonoff is always ready to explore innovative and
interesting aspects of Internet activity. On Oct 15 2011 (in his own words,
?in my first live performance since dinosaurs were killed by the giant
comet?) he provided musical accompaniment for an online improvisational
performance workshop as part of the Mobility Shifts
Conference at
NYC?s New School.The workshop, *Creating Participatory Learning Through
Performance *, organized
by Josephine Dorado, focused on improvisational performance as a framework
for online collaboration and distributed learning. In a dedicated space in
the Second Life virtual world participants danced together interactively.
The audience in NYC was streamed into Second Life via the Internet Society
Chapters Webcasting
Channel which
was projected in the view of the dancers in the space, creating what
Josephine termed a "mixed reality". Members of the audience were then
provided with a bank of computers, instructed on how to create and activate
their own avatars, and then joined in a second performance.

*Avri Doria ends term as ICANN NCSG Chair*
ISOC-NY member Avri Doria has finished her term as the founding chair of
the Non Commercial Stakeholders
Group (NCSG)
of ICANN's Generic Domains Supporting Organization (GNSO). In the last two
years Avri has guided the group from its inception though the complex
process of the establishment of a charter, then gaining the necessary
approvals by the membership and the ICANN board, and then the election of a
Council. A sincerely appreciated herculean effort which she has carried out
with equanimity and remorseless yet patient attention to detail. A further
little known initiative was, subsequent to ICANN 37 in Nairobi in 2010, the
adoption by the NCSG of an orphan baby elephant called
Turkwel,
who is also thriving. It is understood that Avri is now going to turn her
attention to aiding the establishment of consumer interest constituency
within ICANN, another complicated process, which will assuredly benefit
accordingly.
