They will help you to get in and get a NYS teaching license, put you in a s= chool to start yo on your way.
Problem: the NYS teaching license, though will have your name, will not be = yours but property of the NYC DOE. Also, you get to teach without a license= for=A0 2 years while they prepare you for the teaching license test. That = means getting a lower rate of pay, I believe $20 - $22/hr compared to $24 -= $28/hour. Plus during this time you cant join the union because you are no= t a full fledge teacher.
To help you get in, if you know a school principal, you can get them to wri= te you a letter of need, which will speed up your school selection.
If something were to happen to you (like you needing to defend yourself aga= ints a stupid kid or its parents), since the city has your state teaching l= icense, they can and will revoke it.
Hardest: go back to college and take a couple of Education classes, take th= e state exam and apply for the license yourself. Then you have to search th= e DOE system for jobs. If you can get a principal's letter of need, that wo= uld be best for you.=20
In having your own license, the city can not revoke it, though you can be f= ired. Furthermore, if you are fired, you can return after 3 years. During t= his time, you can take the license anywhere in the state or even out of sta= te as it will be honored. NJ has a NY-NJ license transfer program where NY = teachers can go to NJ and work there at a higher rate of pay (NYC has the l= owest rate of pay for its municipal workers- including teachers).
Hope that helps.
A trick with the teaching fellows is to let them get you license which the = city will own, and then reapply for the test a year later for your own lice= nse. Once you have your own license, you can do what ever you want because = you are freed of their restrictions.
Q: You have a Masters in the subject? A Masters in the subject will boost your pay substantially. A Masters in Ed= ucation will take you to $75K/year, and a double masters (Ed and your subje= ct) will push you above $120K/year.
