This I don't understand; type T has an underlying type for the instance, so saying it's "type T" means I just don't know what type it is. :-P

I misstated that. Specifically what was it was compaining about was that type T was being assigned nulls.
The problem I was trying to solve was the construction of variables with storage that was empty for later use, and to be testable later for whether it had data in it or not. Ideally, this is what a null is for but c++ hates nulls
