Apr, 29, 2011 Bellingham's LinuxFest Northwest offers information about open source software * DAVE GALLAGHER / THE BELLINGHAM HERALD* ------------------------------
BELLINGHAM - It'll still have the robot demonstrations and Web developers talking about new software applications, but LinuxFest Northwest is adding a business component this year.
This is the 12th year for the tech event, which features a variety of demonstrations and speakers. The event is free and takes place 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 30 and May 1, at Bellingham Technical College.
This year several of the sessions will include topics about how to turn a program idea into a business. It's an opportunity to take some of the enthusiasm generated at LinuxFest and apply it toward possible business ventures, said Dennis King, a shareholder of BIG Idea Lab, a Bellingham incubator for high-tech firms.
"(Linux) gives more opportunities for people to take a great idea and develop it into a business," said King, noting that the free tools in the Linux operating system allows for inexpensive startups. Today entrepreneurs can get things going with just a computer and an Internet connection, he said.
The sessions being presented by BIG Idea Lab include starting up a business and customer development.
LinuxFest Northwest is also known as an event for those unfamiliar with Linux who want to learn the basics. Along with several introductory courses, booths are staffed with people willing to talk about the operating system, which can be used as an alternative to for-profit operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Vista.
