By all the official accounts, it's been at least 25-30 years since any significant percentage of Long Islanders worked in the city. I suspect this plays some part in the prevailing attitude out here. I recall a significant amount of bitter resentment about the "MTA Tax" on the phone bills when I was growing up. And the MTA does more than its share with the LIRR toward making people out here quit their jobs in Manhattan and work locally. I suppose that's a good thing overall though.
