Thanks for the help. Lets see if this works...
I've erased and reinstall several versions of Linux from up-to-date installations from their websites. All with the same problem- Java 1.5 is installed on these systems instead of 1.6. One would think if the Linux distro has been updated, so should their modules (including Java).
I'm going to reinstall openSuse and install the Java 1.6 dev package.
