I concur with the live cd and chroot idea I've done it my self on more ocssions the I'd like to admit.

The only suggestion I can give is to do what I recently had to do:
get a live CD that is near or at the required OS version
boot up to that
attempt to mount the root volume of the bad install
and chroot to it
and try to recreate the kernel and related stuff with grub commands
It sounds like it is related to initrd, kernel and modules.
