San Francisco's city departments must consider using open source software before buying any commercial software that cost more than $100,000, under a new policy announced Friday.
"Open source software is created by the people for the people and as such is ideal for government," said Gavin Newsom, San Francisco's mayor. The city's open source policy has the potential to save the city millions of dollars in software costs, he said.
The underlying code for open source software is not copyrighted and is distributed free on the Internet so that users can modify it for their own purposes.
Open source software has become increasingly common. The Firefox browser, based on open source code, has more than a 20 percent market share. Other major products include the widely used Linux operating system and Apache web server.
Open source software is already used on some San Francisco web sites such as DataSF.org, RecoverySF.org and the city's 311 integration with Twitter.
