I agree with you but MYSQL did hit that market initially. I remember when MYSQL got started away back when and what really blow the top off for it was the integration with PHP. When MYSQL was firmly integrated into PHP, the top blew off of it and the mailing list became virtually unreadable. There is no way Rames was going to pay Oracle for their license fees to develop PHP. And that is just one example.
