Thanks. I read it and frankly, I think he is wrong about the GPL and that his case is not sound for the reasons I stated. We, at NYLXS at least, are intimately familiar with the issues he has brought up and these issues aren't really unique to MYSQL.
The single biggest mistake, free software politics aside, is that he believes that by removing the GPL from MYSQL he can better protect it. There is all sorts of problems with that, but the biggest problem is that he if history is right, he is wrong. If the GPL was removed from MYSQL, Oracle would then swash Monty like a bug.
The GPL has a derivitive works claus that prevents Oracle from locking anyone else out...anyone in this case is particularly Monty and David.
I actually smell a court case here over the GPL. Monty might be unwittingly setting up grounds for his own destruction and significant;y weaking the GPL and Free Software in General. Taking the "viral licensing" mantra isn't particulary helpful at all.
Believe me, if this was anyone else BUT Monty, I'd be much more adament about how wrong headed this is. But Monty's excellent history as a steward of a major Free Software project isn't enough of a guarantee of the future protection of the database engine to remove the locked in legal protections that the community gets with the GPL.
