I think your problem is a SUSE issue. I think its finally time you give up on SuSE its not the distro it once was and as much as i hoped it would opensuse hasn't fixed that. there are no reports of issues with GRUB reported on HP Mini 110 boxes as a matter of fact as far as i can tell most distros work very well on it except SUSE. see http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20090928
I know your issue with mkinitrd is a SUSE issue because i ran in to it when i briefly tried opensuse 11.0 on my HP Pavilion Elite desktop and its not just a HP hardware issue there were a lot of complaints about it at the time and its not a bug its a patch to prevent users from accidentally damaging the stock initrd image. since version 10 they have gone to great lengths to make it easier for their individual driver developers able to work independently, however an intended side effect is also that it make it extremely difficult to compile your own kernel because the stock kernel source is incomplete and they have extensively modified mkinitrd to work only with their own tools. the reason why they did this is an assumption that users should not compile their own kernel's or kernel drivers. Ruben I know you like to modify your kernel among other things but SuSE (or SUSE as its now called) is now actively designed to prevent the average user from doing that. also SUSE is nolonger a reliable distro many of thier patches introduce sever bugs to the kernel and some of the core utilities.
