"The Prince of Mermaid Avenue" Wins Best Documentary Feature *Congrats to the Film's Director Charles Denson and Jimmy Prince--the Star!
* Denson photo by Norman Blake Charles Denson's film "The Prince of Mermaid Avenue" was awarded Best Documentary Feature at the 9th Annual Coney Island Film Festival . The film is about Jimmy Prince, owner of Major Meats on Mermaid Avenue, who retired in February after 60 years at Coney's oldest butcher shop. The film project began with Mr. Denson's daily visits to Major's and his audio recordings for the Coney Island History Project's Oral History Archive . Mr. Denson has been filming the documentary about Mr. Prince and his customers for the past three years. "The Prince of Mermaid Avenue" premiered on October 2, the opening night of the festival. In a question and answer session after the screening, Mr. Denson talked about the genesis of the film, which is based on more than 60 hours of raw footage.
Jimmy Prince by Denson Jimmy Prince told the audience how he's been keeping busy since his retirement. He spent summer weekends working as "Distinguished Historian" at the History Project's exhibition center under the Cyclone, sharing his Coney Island memories with visitors. The good news is that Major's renowned and much missed "murder burgers" are now available at G & S Meat Market on Avenue U, where Mr. Prince enjoys working part time. "The Prince of Mermaid Avenue" will be screened again soon in Coney Island. Stay tuned to our website for upcoming news.

The new literary and performance festival debuted on Sept 12-13 at the Alien Stingers exhibit at the New York Aquarium. Day 2 was hosted by the illustrious burlesque dancer Angie Pontani (Miss Cyclone) pictured above with Charles Denson, who read the chapter about riding the Parachute Jump from his book Coney Island: Lost and Found . Sunday's readers included (from left to right) actor John Ventimiglia, "Artie Bucco" from The Sopranos; festival producer and director Amanda Deutch; post-punk poet Eileen Myles; Edmund Berrigan, poet and member of the band I Feel Tractor; Michael Cirelli, poet and founder of Urban Word NYC; and poet and fiction writer Jibade Khalil Huffman. The festival also hosted two free poetry workshops at the Coney Island Public Library --"Writing Poetry with Confidence" with Cara Benson and "Coney Island on Our Minds" with Patricia Spears-Jones. We're already looking forward to next season's festival, which will feature theater and performance in addition to poetry, prose and spoken word.
