There's several to choose from, and the real problem here is likely to be figuring out which is the one most compatible with what they're supposed to be doing their assignments on. > > This wouldn't help them with the mainframe environment > but it would with COBOL. Practice makes perfect.
I did my college programming assignments elsewhere after one exceedingly unpleasant afternoon spent with CANDE and the not-quite-compatible terminals hooked up to the Burroughs mainframe there. I can't imagine what students face today, but I'd guess they're still better off avoiding the college's student computing resources.
