you are right the bulk of googles OS will be open source as opposed to free spaecha software. There is a litte more here though that though.
Actualy the article is inacurate.
VMWare has drivers in the current linux kernel tree just not the kernels that are included by vendors like Red Hat.in addition the VMWare server platform is 100% GPL and so is their ESX platform. I know I didn't bleave it my self their flag ship comecial product is GPL but it is and it was pointed out to me by a sinior windows SA I've worked with for years and ia accused him of lieing or missinterpreting but after a little resesrch I found I was wrong. Now only their managment tools are closed source the rest is gpl except for the sdks which cover both those are open source.
Mictosoft looked into reviving the only version of UNIX they own XENIX just prior to the development of windows 2000 and found it was economicly unfeasable without utilizing GPL code. At the time microsoft thought this was unacceptable. There has been a shift in recent years though their native virtualization technoligy is licenced form a Xen-works now owned by Citrix, the technoligy of which came out of the GNU/Linux comunity.
Also HP has its own fork of Ubuntu and RHEL. And truth be told HP provides better support for RHEL than Red Hat and also pays tje Red Hat support costs. HP has aolready anounced the date for the HPUX EOL ( End Of Life) in favor of Linux
frankly Microsoft as an opertunistic beast as it is has been looking at the HP/Red Hat/GNU/Lunux model and saying this is highly profitable and the way that IT is going in the future we better start jumping on before its too late,

You must be referring to their Linux-based operating system. Calling it
GNU is misleading to those of us who would prefer that it were a
GNU-based OS. While we might like the idea of riding on Google's
publicity coattails, I see them having and executing a very different
set of aims than we have. I'd bet your friend Richard holds a much less
charitable view about it than I do.
