Here are some from Newegg.com, where you mentioned you were looking:
Aspire One (blue, 2 lbs) with 8.9" screen, 512 MB RAM, 8 GB disk - $300 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115530
Aspire One (white, 2 lbs) with 8.9" screen, 512 MB RAM, 8 GB disk - $300 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115489R
Eee PC (white, 3 lbs) with 10.0" screen, 1 GB RAM, 40 (60?) GB disk - $400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220368
There are also some good ones from Dell (I recommend those running Ubuntu):
Mini 9 (white, 2.3 lbs) with 8.9" screen, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB disk - $279 http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-9?c=us
Mini 12 (white, 2.7 lbs) with 12.1" screen, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB disk - $399 http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop-inspiron-12?c=us
You said you were looking for a small laptop so those are the suggestions I gave. All of these are 3 pounds or less, compared with 5-8 pounds for a large laptop. I would take my 3 pound laptop with me over my 8 pound laptop any day; it's so much lighter.
My recommendations are all for laptops running a distribution of Linux (either Ubuntu or another one). These tend to be less expensive and more customizable than Windows. These will do web browsing, e-mail, word processing, and virtually any other task you would normally do in Windows. However, if there are specific Windows applications that you rely on, they might not be right for you. Let me know if you're concerned about that.
If you have any questions about my suggestions, I'd be happy to answer them.
