Hi Amy,
I personally own a new (early 2009) MacBook, and an Asus Eee PC. My Asus runs Debian squeeze-testing, and everything works perfectly; I originally installed lenny-stable and switched repos to squeeze.
Anyway, I would recommend the Asus for several reasons:
First, it's inexpensive (mine is the Model 1000 which goes for about $379). Second, it's small and lightweight, with a 10" screen with 1024x600 resolution. It weighs just under 3 pounds, and is about the size of a notebook. Third, it's got good Linux support with Eeebuntu, Debian, Fedora, and more all running without issues on it.
