I think Ruben nailed it when he kicked this off by pointing out that there was a lack of work on projects. People ultimately take interest when there is activity. Not so much when it's only speech.
I have a simple project which I think could show a lot of promise as a starting point.
Gnome/KDE both lack a decent outliner. Here is an example of a good outliner - http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnioutliner/
I think if two or three of us would collaborate on something like this, it would start to generate interest and enthusiasm. Generally, when there is activity, especially useful activity, people tend to take a greater interest. From that point other people might get the idea of doing a project of their own, then another group, etc. I could be wrong of course, but I think that it's a good idea.
However, while I'm willing to put in a couple of hours a week on this, but I'm simply not going to do it if no one else will.
I'd be very pleased if one or two people would be willing to step forward and join me on this. It's not even necessary for them to be developers either. Just a willingness to put in some time and creativity.
Balls in your court guys, I'd love it if you slam it back my way.
