Special Tzedaka Collection and more for IDF soldiers in the war | Posted: Jan 6, 2009
Letter from Rabbi Schwed: On Asara B'Tevet, we had two important assemblies in grades 4-8 in the Elementary School to inform our students about the situation in Israel, and in particular the war that Tzahal is fighting against Hamas in Gaza. We explained about the Kassam rockets landing in Sderot, Ashkelon, Ashdod and Be'er Sheva, and why Israel needed to go to war to protect our fellow Jews in Southern Israel. The children heard about what it is like to live in fear of rockets landing near their homes and schools for the past eight years. We said Tehillim, recited a prayer for the soldiers, and sang HaTikva.
Torah Studies teachers will be asking students to write letters (in Hebrew) to soldiers in the war. Younger students will draw pictures. These will be taken directly to army bases in Israel during intersession. We are also collecting Tzedakah to raise money for fleece jackets for one army unit. I received an email from a graduate of ours, Westleigh Nirenberg, who is currently serving in Tzahal, stating that it gets very cold at night, when many of the military operations happen. Wes has siblings in our school, one of whom has collected money from high school students for these jackets as well. Tzahal will only accept contributions of this sort for an entire unit of soldiers. Our goal is to raise $6,000. We are asking each student to bring in at least one dollar toward this goal.
Anyone wishing to send in a check to join in our effort is requested to make the check out to "Yeshivah of Flatbush Charity Fund," amd send it to my office. We would like to conclude this tzedakah campaign before intersession.
Our middle division students are also joining thousands of other Jews throughout the world in a special "Operation Tefillah, Torah, and Troops," in which each student will be given the name of one soldier fighting in the war. We ask that the students keep this soldier's name on them for the next few weeks, keeping him in mind when davening, learning Torah and doing chesed in the soldier's name. This project was started by Rabbi Simcha HaCohen Kook, chief Rabbi of Rehovot. Parents who would like to participate in "Operation Tefillah, Torah & Troops" and receive the name of an Israeli soldier who needs your prayers, are requested to send an e-mail to the office of Rabbi Kook at maortlmo-at-gmail.com. To request the name of a soldier by phone or fax, call the National Council of Young Israel at 212-929-1525 x100, or send a fax to 212-727-9526.
It is important that all of our children build a strong bond with the State of Israel, and especially with the Jews living there. The concept of Am Israel, and the unity of our people in times like these require that we educate our children in the Torah values that we hold dear. Please speak to your children at home about this and encourage them to participate to the fullest extent possible. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.
Sincerely, Rabbi Lawrence Schwed Principal, Yeshivah of Flatbush Elementary School
