That's asking way too much of these umpc devices. They have limited functionality, although for the portability, it is a great compromise. Allows you to be productive in situations where you normally wouldn't.
I got mine so that I could enter data into sugarCRM while sitting in a Panera or Starbucks during lunch or a break. Also wanted to be able to read lengthy pdf and perhaps gutenberg text documents while travelling. Working out an occasional spreadsheet, or creating a document while out of the office. Oh, and taking notes during a LILUG meeting.
I gotta say, mine has given me much more than that, but that was what I was looking for, and for $400, I got what I needed. However, I did have to open the thing up and attach an antenna to the internal usb wireless card, and change the driver to the latest, experimental one, since the one in Ubuntu for this realtek chip is bad and utterly worthless. Fortunately, with Linux, it is easier to find answers and fixes than it is with Windows.
I've noticed with Windows now, that supposedly helpful, problem solving sites have gone to subscription model. It also takes longer searching to find answers to your problems, and they aren't always solved. Considering that Linux is easier to install, easier to fix, is more complete, and a more familiar interface than Vista and the new Office, I see Linux finally coming of age.
I do know that many people have installed XP on their eee pc. Perhaps that's what Ruben should do. He'll need Office as well. And antivirus. Perhaps he can report back on the experience. ;)

My bigest thing is I just want it to work relyably without much effort. After having a gentoo desktop for a few years I've gotten to the point where I don't want to feel like maintaining my home pc or laptop is a second full time job. > ----------------------- > Sent from my Treo(r) smartphone > > -----Original Message----- > From: > Date: Thursday, Jul 31, 2008 7:38 pm > Subject: Re: [NYLXS - HANGOUT] Time to trash the eeepc > To: hangout-at-mrbrklyn.com, > CC: Reply-To: hangout-at-mrbrklyn.com > > I put Debian on mine and I have a data/phone card. It all comes down to expectation. > For me I just want a simple machine to do my perl hacking, update my resume, ocasionaly browse the web, and be able to hook up to my cell phone in and vpn and ssh into the systems at work if there is an emergecy at work while durring off hours. everything else I do on my quadcore amd desktop at home or a server at work. > > I don't expect my eeepc to be a postgresql development or to do all of the things I would expect a full size laptop to do. So I'm happy with the abundance of functions it has. Also I spent the extra $100 for the 4GB flash and bigger battery so I don't have some of the same complaint as Rubin about storage space and battery life. > ----------------------- > Sent from my Treo(r) smartphone > > -----Original Message----- > From: Mark Simko > Date: Thursday, Jul 31, 2008 5:27 pm > Subject: Re: [NYLXS - HANGOUT] Time to trash the eeepc > To: hangout-at-mrbrklyn.comReply-To: hangout-at-mrbrklyn.com > > Ah, perhaps you've come to your senses. > > I did the same with the Cloudbook. Actually, that decision was made for me after gOS trashed its linux-image during an update. I went with Ubuntu. > > I still have issues with the webcam, but that is nonessential. Oh, and my lap gets toasty warm if I make the mistake of keeping it there.
