No, it's not just eye candy. I say this as someone who utterly despises Flash, but look out, Adobe is being quite successful lately in their efforts to turn Web browsers into a stoop for Flash.
I think this is a much bigger problem than whether or not IE8 supports Web standards better or the other stuff everyone else seems to be worrying about. Flash is becoming a whole new world of trouble.
