Having no idea that he was a violent thug, I phoned Ruben,
once, about a week ago, to offer to edit his excellent article
about the OLPC and Microsoft. I wanted to put it on my
website. Starting from Microsoft, he said that pharmaceutical
companies are worse. I replied that weapons ("defense")
corporations are very bad, too. He said he likes those,
because he's a conservative. I asked if he knew about the
flying columns and molten steel of the World Trade Center,
and he started to shout at me about "conspiracy theories".
He then said that when a tall building falls it creates a
starburst. I asked what that meant, and he said temperatures
so high they cause a nuclear reaction, which is what kept
the steel puddles molten for (he said) 9 months. I asked
if he meant the conversion of potential (gravitational)
energy into heat energy when the girders fell, and he said
no, it had to do with entropy, and I couldn't understand it
unless I had a Ph.D in physics like he does. Then he
hung up on me. Of course I didn't phone him again.
It's a good thing this "starburst" claim is nonsense,
otherwise one could trigger a fusion bomb by shooting
a bullet at a mass of lithium deuteride.
This shows that a person can be very knowledgeable in
some areas (Linux) and very ignorant and unwilling to
learn in others (politics and physics).
