***GROUNDBREAKING TENANT PROTECTION LEGISLATION SIGNED INTO LAW*** Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, together with Council Members Daniel R. Garodnick and Melissa Mark-Viverito, joined over 300 tenants and housing advocates at a rally on the steps of City Hall to support the signing of the Tenant Protection Act. First mentioned in Quinn's 2007 State of the City Address, the law will create a new umbrella of protection for tenants who are being harassed by their landlords.
Under the previous legal framework, tenants who were being harassed by their landlords had to file a separate complaint in court for each individual act of harassment, a prohibitively onerous process that made it difficult - if not impossible - for tenants to protect themselves from landlords intent on removing them from their homes. This new law makes harassment itself a violation, providing a new layer of legal protection for the City's tenants.
