I would agree here to some extent.
I think that when Caldera bought the Unix division from The Santa Cruz Operation, that Caldera believed that they received the Unix IP. Either they were sold a bill of goods by Santa Cruz or they were simply misinformed. I also think that when they engaged in their case against IBM, they may have been under the misguided impression that IBM would simply pay them off. For a short while, they were able to bully some Linux users.
I do think that their attorneys used a lot of smoke and mirrors, but the slander charge they leveled at Novell indicates that they actually believed that they owned the Unix copyrights.
