Hello All,
Sadly, this will be the last E-Update newsletter I ever send out. I am leaving the Office of Council Member Gale A. Brewer this Friday, August 24 to become the Chief of Staff to the Chief Information Officer of the New York City Department of Education. I will be working closely with the Chief Information Officer, Ted Brodheim, to help in the transformation of the New York City public school system through the strategic use of technology, both inside and outside the classroom. Needless to say, this is an incredibly exciting opportunity to tackle the "digital divide" in another way, and I look forward to the challenge.
Shula Warren, currently the Director of Legislation and Budget for the office, will take over as Chief of Staff. Shula is an amazing person and will do a great job as Chief of Staff. Kunal Malhotra, a graduate of University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a recent recipient of the prestigious Truman Scholarship, will take over the responsibility of being the technology go-to person for Gale. He will be writing the E-Update newsletter as well as coordinating our office's involvement with the Committee on Technology in Government and the NYC Broadband Advisory Committee. Kunal will start in mid-September. Please welcome and support Shula and Kunal in their new roles. Any Chief of Staff-related e-mails should go to Shula at shula.warren-at-council.nyc.ny.us. Until Kunal starts and has had time to settle in, any technology-related e-mails should go to the main office e-mail, gale.brewer-at-council.nyc.ny.us.
It has been a honor to serve under Council Member Brewer these past four years, two as the Policy Analyst of the Committee on Technology in Government and two as her Chief of Staff. She does everything that an elected official should do. Gale works incredibly hard for her constituents and the district. She is a policy wonk and a government budget guru -- balancing the needs of her district with the needs of other neighborhoods and the entire city. Finally, she is an incredibly kind and generous person who wants to help everyone, literally. Gale has been a friend and a mentor, and I have had a great time here at the Council, primarily because of her.
To the Brew Crew, the many (many!) Brewer interns and everyone else at the City Council, thank you, thank you, thank you. You've all been great, and it's been an honor to work with all of you.
I will stop checking my e-mail addresses, bruce.lai-at-council.nyc.ny.us and bruce.lai-at-council.nyc.gov, this Friday, August 24. Shula Warren will inherit my blackberry so if you call 347.563.1295 after this Friday, it will not get to me. In the mean time, you can e-mail me at brucelai-at-earthlink.net. If you are on Plaxo, please send me (at my personal e-mail address) your card so I have your current contact information. When I get my new contact information, I will send it out -- through Plaxo and through my new e-mail address.
Thanks everyone. I hope you will continue to support Gale and the rest of her staff in her efforts to make technology work for the people of New York City and with everything else she does.
Warm regards, Bruce
