I'd say it takes the stance that everyone in our base constituency
_already knows why_ -- that reaching a broad range of others in
_addition_ to ourselves requires a marketing _campaign_ couched in
pragmatic language. OSI's Web site is explicit about this in a number
of places, including http://www.opensource.org/advocacy/faq.php :
The Open Source Initiative is a marketing program for free software.
It's a pitch for "free software" because it works, not because it's
the only right thing to do. We're selling freedom on its merits. We
realise that many organisations adopt software for technical or
financial reasons rather than for its freedom. Many users learn to
appreciate freedom through their own experience, rather than by being
told about it.
I fully understand people not wanting to participate in that marketing
campaign. I decline to do so myself -- though, more because I don't
want to waste my time on software advocacy than for any more specific
reason. However, I just wanted to point out that asserting that open
source people don't care about freedom just because it isn't featured in
their targeted marketing campaign is a (blatantly) non-sequitur argument
-- and demonstrably wrong in some obvious cases, such as OSI itself.
