Long-term maintainability of opensource is nice, but how about short- term usability? I've documented 12 crashes on my powerbook in the past two years. 5 of them were because of a bug in Apple's APM implementation. The other 7 were because firefox still doesn't quite handle flash properly.
Before OS X, I had 7 years of Linux desktop hell. I probably wasted 300 hours over those 7 years debugging window manager problems, tweaking X, switching to X.org, yadda yaddaya yadda. Linux is not a desktop operating system for the real world. If you have nothing else going on in your life, sure, spend 20 hours a month trying to get KDE or GNU or any of the other hacked together bits of bloatware to run reliably, in the mean time, I'll run OSX and spend those extra 20 hours on important business, like my own company, or my family.
I'm sorry, but the hacker mentality gets in the way of productivity way too often. WIndows XP is a superior desktop than Linux. Linux is an adequate (though far too bleeding-edge sometimes) server operating system, but it's nothing more than that.
