its a daemon it collects data from /proc and other sources then saves the information in a set of rrd files so it dose not need root permission to collect data, and since it uses rrd files it gives you a time laps history. It runs on its own web server with its own user accounts and acls so you dont have to give ntop users acounts to the system and you dont need apache on the box. Its about as secure as a web gui gets if thats worth much we actualy would lock it down with iptable rules to limit which workstations could access it.
