Subject: [opensuse-announce] SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta1 Released

SUSE Linux 10.1 Codename "Agama Lizard" Beta1 is ready for testing.

Please report all bugs in http://bugzilla.novell.com .

A list of known issues is on:
http://www.opensuse.org/index.php/Bugs:most_annoying_bugs

For now let me just point out the following issues:

* Theming is not complete, there's still 10.0 theming used in many
places.

* Enabling the firewall during installation does not work and/or
internet test does not work [Bug #143751]

* If you use NetworkManager, network is not setup after installation.
Edit /etc/sysconfig/network/config and set:
NETWORKMANAGER=yes (instead of no)
and then run "rcnetwork restart"

* The software selection for a 64-bit x86-64 installation does
complain about a conflict in the package selection. Enter the
package manager and press "Ignore all" in the dialog which shows
conflicts for compat-32bit.

Created within the openSUSE project, SUSE Linux 10.1 is designed for
individuals looking to work with latest open source technologies -- a
stabilized Linux operating system, solutions for desktop productivity,
application development, web hosting, security and more completely
integrated to make the world's most usable Linux. SUSE Linux 10.1
supports the Intel and AMD x86 and x86-64 platforms as well as the
PowerPC platform.

SUSE Linux 10.1 offers a comprehensive selection of open source
software for a variety to task from, email, Internet, development,
productivity, Security, server, graphics and more. Among many updates
and enhancements here the most important ones:

* The distribution comes with 5 CDs. You need (on x86 and x86-64, I
haven't tested PPC):
- Only CD1 for a minimal text installation in English
- CDs 1-3 for a default KDE or GNOME installation in German or English
- All CDs for other selections

* We're integrating NetworkManager into the product. Currently it is
enabled by default, with Beta2, it will be enabled on Notebooks only
- with the choice to enable/disable it as you like. We have improved
NetworkManager to support WPA encryption for WLan, Modems and ISDN
and written a new frontend kdenetworkmanager so that NetworkManager
has native graphical frontends for both GNOME and KDE.

* The partitioner proposes to put /home on a separate partition.

* The SUSE Linux 10.1 core system comes with CVS versions of glibc
2.4 and GCC 4.1, X.org 6.9, KDE 3.5, GNOME 2.12.2, Linux 2.6.15.

* SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta1 comes with the Intrusion Prevention framework
AppArmor 2.0.

* The latest versions from the Mozilla project: Firefox 1.5 and
SeaMonkey 1.0 pre-release.

* Further details are documented at: http://www.opensuse.org/Factory-News

* PPC only: The jsm serial driver is gone, its maintainers failed to
fix it. There is thus no way to boot on (old or new) PPC systems
with 8250 serial ports.

We've created on

Among many updates and enhancements here the most important ones: we're integrating NetworkManager into the product; the partitioner proposes to put /home on a separate partition; the core system comes with CVS versions of glibc 2.4 and GCC 4.1, X.Org 6.9, KDE 3.5, GNOME 2.12.2, Linux 2.6.15; it comes with the intrusion prevention framework AppArmor 2.0; the latest versions from the Mozilla project - Firefox 1.5 and SeaMonkey 1.0 pre-release." SUSE Linux 10.1 Codename "Agama Lizard" Beta1 is ready for testing.

NETWORKMANAGER=yes (instead of no)
and then run "rcnetwork restart"
