Except that my intuition doesn't usually lead me to wanting to wait 3 days of compiling (!!!) to upgrade Mozilla, Kde, or OpenOffice.
well you can tell it to use pre compiled packages however most people dont because in doing so you loose the flexability of the distrobution. also usualy you dont have to doo a multi day compile after the install unless you have changed the use option in the /etc/make.conf
