Associated Press Card Holders Should Monitor Accounts 06.18.2005, 06:01 PM
CREDIT CARDS AT RISK: Up to 40 million credit card accounts could have been exposed to fraud that was tracked to a company that processes payments for banks and merchants. MasterCard said only about 68,000 of its 13.9 million accounts with Atlanta-based CardSystems were considered at high risk.
CUSTOMERS BEWARE: Card holders were urged to carefully monitor their statements for unauthorized activity and to contact the issuing banks with concerns. If fraud is found, banks may provide a new card number and new card.
CONSUMER PROTECTION: By federal law, credit card holders are liable for no more than $50 of unauthorized charges. MasterCard and some other companies offer zero liability to customers on fraud.
IDENTITY THEFT: Information used in identity theft, including Social Security numbers and dates of birth, was not stored with the credit card accounts.
