SUBJECT | RE: [NYLXS - HANGOUT] Null modem
|
I am connecting a Sun Ultra 2 via a serial connection to a PC to install Linux on it. The Ultra does not have a CDROM (it requires a SCSI CDROM), the installation can be performed via a network connection. On ultralinux.com's FAQ in section 5 it implies that a distro install can be performed via a serial connection. Sun recommends a null modem with handshaking ability. However I borrowed this dinky null modem from the sysadmin yesterday and I was able to connect to the machine using Kermit.
On the topic of hardware, if anyone has a SCSI CDROM which they do not need that to 'donate' to this cause that would be jim-dandy. While I'm on the topic of Sun hardware, I have an Ultra 5 that needs memory.
Thanks, Steve
