SUBJECT | Subject: [hangout] Last Nights Meeting and follow up
|
I want to thank everyone for participating in last nights meeting. We really have broken new ground and are ready for this new years activities.
JoAnn Cripps, the new recording secretary, will post minutes on the results of last nights meeting.
I want to thank Evan for posting that email previous to this one, which covers some of the basics of last nights event.
One of the great things about NYLXS, is the strength of our charter, and our union. Because NYLXS has new elections every year, we have the great pleasure of getting a new beginning and a fresh start every April. In fact, last nights well attended meeting in downtown Brooklyn reminded me the first NYLXS meeting in 2001. Everything feels fresh and opportunity stands before us.
NYLXS has great people. Our people are motivated, intelligent, competent and energized. And we have mapped a play for 2005 which is exciting and doable.
I would like to discuss two of the largest new projects NYLXS is to undertake this year, and try to explain to all the members of NYLXS why our board has found these two projects so vital.
First, NYLXS is announcing that it will be offering a new scholarship award for High School students for the sum of $2000.00. The scholarship will be awarded for the student who has produced the most useful and interesting Free Software project, and judged by a panel which will be assembled.
I hope that everyone shares the excitement I have for this wonderful project. For years I have met students who were interested in Free Software, and students who need money for college, who have real enthusiasm, talent and energy. Outlets for these young people are hard to find. Our scholarship will help provide this outlet, while forging the citizenship skills for a whole new generation of Free Software developers.
The second project which NYLXS is coming together on is the Freedom-IT expo. The Freedom-IT expo is now going to be scheduled for the 1st week in September, and the show is being tied into the scholarship program. The centerpiece for Freedom-IT is now going to be an exposition of the Scholarship participants and the awarding of the scholarship to the best project. I am so excited about this!
Finally, I want to all my friends associated with NYLXS, and who might be reading this letter, to please consider joining NYLXS as formal members, and to participate with us in the coming year. NYLXS is a great organization, but it needs your participating. Now is a wonderful time to budget some of your personal time for projects and activities which are of direct import to your life. NYLXS is only as stong as its membership, We not only need fancy coders, but we equally need writers, artists, envelop stuffers, business people, do'ers of every kind! Please join NYLXS today.
