Well, I'm feeling contrarian today, so I'm going to say anything that gets you interested in programming is a good thing, especially if it's for yourself. The standard for a fine program that you wrote yourself for yourself should be that it _works_.
Nevertheless, professional standards is something of a hot topic in here, and also among my friends who know nothing of NYLXS's or NYLUG's mailing lists. If you're planning on doing this for a living, please _do_ make sure to go back to the beginning. It makes a big difference in the quality of not just the code itself, but the solutions devised. I know of one company who I won't name, but they've been a symbol of quality for some time now and they're in the midst of trying to fulfill a hiring quota now, and have reduced themselves to bringing in people who are pleased with themselves for over commenting obvious lines of code. (or perhaps not obvious to them, just anyone who's actually competent) That company's fate is now sealed.
btw: The first "compiler" I owned was Pascal for the C-64. I'd love to smack my high school teachers who were peddling this nonsense about Pascal being the language of the future.

That's rather uncharacteristic of this group, but not being a member myself, I have no useful suggestion other than to keep trying, and perhaps look for someone in IRC. (irc.freenode.net #nylxs)
