Just as a heads up. I have been working with helix http://www.e-fense.com/helix/
It is a forensics live cd works great for recovery of linux machines as well as windows machines (if you have to deal with them) including things like taking an image of a harddrive over the network.
I am hoping that it will stay current but so far that seems to be the case. (I was using some other distros in the past but they did not stand the fate of time ex: the fire distro which just did not improve)
btw, helix does not use kde but does provide things like a logging terminal.
