Welcome the the NYLXS mailing list. There are a few things to consider with regard to setting up a system with exchange functionality. Exchange is not secure and its biggest functionality is as a spam trap and a security hole for the Microsoft OS. It should not be emulated although there is a product called connector which can emulate exchange.
Instead, a real groupware server should be installed. There are many including some web based programs which are clearly superior in almost every way to exchange. PHPgroupware is one that comes to mind, but far from my favorite.

As per the financial considerations, see the above. NYLXS Membership is $40 plus 20 volunteer hours per quarter.
For experience and education, I strongly recommend the Free SOftware Institution classes. They give the best background of any program available for people entering the GNU/Linux field. Be aware, that a windows background does not prepare you for real computing understanding and especially GNU/Linux background. If anything, it hinders the development of skills and the Windows OS encourages dependency in this fashion as a business goal. Free Software encourages understanding and independence as the communities goal. As such, it is a different, almost academic approach and software usage model which encourages understanding and learning all through the life cycle of the end user (which is everyone: everyone is an end user). > > Also, would this be a poor place to ask questions about C programming? > You can ask C programming questions. I caution you that IMO, C and programming in general requires formal learning. There are a lot of bad programs out there written by self taught programmers and they reflect this in their functionality and code.
