I read the article in the NY Times about this, and they mentioned the MTA is testing their first computerized line this summer. I mentioned this to someone the other day, and was told this person had a friend at the Port Authority who was involved in this project somehow or other.
At this point it's going to come as no surprise that the subways are about to be controlled by Microsoft Windows, God save us.
