SUBJECT | Re: [hangout] Re: Upcoming Hearings by the Committee on Technology in Government of the New York City Council Repost

I arrived late, I heard the last three speakers A) One person who spoke was formerly in the Air Force and was representing his private company. His company does DSL/internet wiring in low cost housing across America. One ting he said was NYC's housing is regulated to such an extent that it prevents business or separate entities to go in to wire a building for high speed internet. B) The next group was a fellow from www.nycwireless.com and a lady who works in the housing projects in Riis Queens (I believe). The rep from nycwireless spoke about how his organization can wire a building for around 3k for wireless depending on hardware availablity (he works for Cisco). The lady made mention about her experience (she has an MBA, a masters in music, she volunteered for the Peace Corp and a few other things). She spoke about how important it is to bring high tech to the low cost housing projects and how the organization she represents has made strides with getting people involved using computers. One thing I should mention is the fellow from nycwireless mentioned open source software. C) The last person who spoke represented another non-profit organization. He spoke about how his organization utilizes smart cards and mentioned how they empower the individual. Not sure how that is supposed to empower the individual. There was talk about putting WiFi on telephone poles. There were a lot of handouts I grabbed them all. The handouts have the names of the organizations that spoke. There will be another meeting December 9th I couldnt stick around and talk to anyone because I had to get back to class.
