I didn't get a chance to read this before and it is certainly interesting and exposes some of the
problems we've expereicned with Novel over the last year. The fact that the infighting became so
intense that Stone felt that he had to leave the company is indicative of the internal problems
Novel must be suffering from.
I beleive that the Wall Street Analysis, for a change, have this right. There is no way Novel
can surive long term pushing proprietary pieces on top of the Free Operating system. And in fact,
such a stratergy thus far is causing problems in helping them gain market share for SuSE.
Of the more distressing part of this story is that Novel is having problems with one of the key
features of Free Software, which is the inherent argueing and friction which Free Software communities
have. Instead of learning to suffer disagreement and discourse without baring fisticuffs and bruised
egos, they've let their disagreements cause permanent fissure in their organizational ranks.
In truth, to success, Novel needs to split the different in the opposing analysis between the two views.
They need to give away the OS AND cream the value from the operating system. In a order, they need
to focus on customization, verticle market development, and consulting, and move completely away from
commoditization of services. Instead, they need to tied the desktop to the server, develop verticle
markets for a fee, and become real partners with their clients. There is a lot of profit available
for this market, and it will allow for Accountants, Manufactorers and Healthcare providers to focus
on their missions, while the Novel service providers can respond and effectivily focus on the information
technology.
