Apparently, you are lacking the skills. I don't mean to offend you but seriously, what competent sysadmin needs help installing the very OS that they'll be supporting? I suggest you implement an ounce of humility here and look at this from an outside point of view. For all I know, you may have some serious programming skills (I have no idea). That doesn't mean that you are automatically qualified to take on the role of a system administrator.
" in the city if not the country. An opportunity for the students to sharpen " their IT skills in a real world environment would prove exponentially " beneficial to them and the faculty. Hiring a contractor whose only interest " is to earn a buck would not bring the same benefits. What you suggest goes
Why would you make such assumptions regarding a contractor's motives?
" against the basics of Free Software and I am surprised you suggested something " like this.
Free Software != Free Service
What I suggest is VERY MUCH in alignment with the intentions of the Free Software movement because my approach is the logical course of take when trying to build something sustainable.
" The impression I get from this reply says that you feel that absolutely no one " who is not certified should touch a computer. To me that strikes of a " proprietary software model environment.
Touching a computer and building computers that others will depend on are two different things.
" " Where does beer even come into the picture?
Steve, you've come a long way over the past year but you're not "there" yet. Keep listening, keep reading, keep asking questions. Confusion is actually a good thing. It means that the brain is busy processing information. In your case, you just need more time (I hope).
