How? Aren't they using the same hardware in the same IA32 "protected mode" memory model (limiting discussion to CPUs on which W32 runs).

I guess I don't understand, then. My intuition, however, is tending towards disagreement.
I've done some programming on both systems, and they seem pretty similar in terms of memory management. I'm not schooled enough in the internals to make any definitive statements on this, which makes me wonder what makes you so sure of yourself.
